Proof that good writing can certainly stand the test of time, Margaret Mahy's 1984 YA fantasy thriller is being made into a dark, chilling and decidedly sexy movie by Firefly Films. Starring well known actors Timothy Spall (as a very nasty Carmody Braque, ready to suck the life and soul out of tempting humans), Melanie Lynskey and Lucy Lawless and directed and adapted by NZ's Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie. Filmed in red zone and CBD Christchurch, this is ultimately a love story - a creepy love story - where our heroine Laura Chant (played by Kiwi newcomer Erana James) has to find herself and 'changeover' to become a witch to save her little brother from the life sucking Braque. She asks for help from Sorenson Carlisle, a prefect at her school who she has recognised as a witch in hiding and a strange romance |
I recommend reading or rereading this wonderful story before the movie comes out late in September this year.
