This story is told in the first person, with frequent use of short sentences, which help move the story along quickly. It is exciting and creates vivid images in the mind of the reader. The villain, Roth, seems particularly frightening, as he does not speak, although he is able to enter people’s minds. Jane and her friends travel through a constantly changing series of inter-connecting realms, looking for the means to defeat Roth, for Jane’s parents, and the truth about who or what Jane actually is. The history of the main characters are revealed slowly and over time, causing consternation, grief, and understanding. The dangers encountered are carefully described, show originality and are downright scary.
This is the first book in a duology.
